Oak & LinenBodywork studio, Kansas City Northland

(816) 555-0142 Book a session

Bodywork, booked by the hour you actually have.

Two rooms and a cedar room, above the hardware store on North Oak. Everything below is listed by how long it takes, because that is the part you have to fit around a workday.

Every session on this page says what you wear, what you lie on, whether anyone talks, and what the rest of your afternoon looks like. Those four things are what people ask on the phone, so they are written down instead.

Book a session or call (816) 555-0142

A treatment room in the late morning: a low table made up in cream linen, a stack of folded sheets on a pale oak bench, and a slatted oak wall behind it.

The list, by length.

Prices are per session. Nothing on this page is a course of treatment and nothing here is scheduled in a series unless you ask for one.

30 minutes

Booked at the top of the hour and the half hour. Most people come on a lunch break and go back to work.

Chair and shoulders

$55

You sit forward in a padded chair with your face in a rest. The work is the upper back, the shoulders, the neck and the scalp, through a cotton cover.

You wear
Whatever you came in.
You are on
A chair, seated forward.
Talking
Your call. Most people don't.
After
You can go straight back. No oil is used.

Feet, knee down

$55

Reflexology. A warm soak first, then thumb and knuckle pressure through the sole, the arch and the calf, one foot at a time.

You wear
Everything. Shoes and socks off.
You are on
A reclined chair, feet up.
Talking
Your call.
After
Your feet will be oiled. Bring the socks you want to leave in.

60 minutes

The ordinary appointment. Allow ten minutes either side, so the hour on the books is about eighty minutes in the building.

Assisted stretch

$95

You stay dressed. The therapist moves a limb through its range, holds it at the end of that range, and asks you to press back against the hold for a few seconds before going further. Hips, hamstrings, shoulders and the thoracic spine, in that order.

You wear
Leggings or shorts and a t-shirt. Bring them or borrow ours.
You are on
A wide low table.
Talking
Expected. You are asked to breathe on cue and to say where the stretch is landing.
After
You can drive. No oil, no shower needed.

Cupping and glide

$105

Silicone and glass cups are set on oiled skin over the back and the backs of the legs, then either left in place or slid along the muscle. Round marks are normal and are the whole reason we mention it before you book.

You wear
Undress to your comfort. You are draped throughout and only the area being worked is uncovered.
You are on
A table, face down then face up.
Talking
Not expected.
After
Round marks, usually for three to seven days. Don't book this the week of a wedding or a beach trip.

Thai, on the mat

$105

On a firm mat on the floor, fully clothed. The therapist uses forearms, feet and body weight to move you into positions and holds them, working the whole body from the feet upward. There is no oil and no table.

You wear
Loose clothes you can sit cross-legged in. No jeans, no belt.
You are on
A padded mat, on the floor.
Talking
Not expected, but say so when something is at its limit.
After
You walk out in the same clothes. Some people feel it the next day the way they would after a class.

Prenatal, side-lying

$95

Booked from the second trimester, on your side with a full bolster set: one under the head, one between the knees, one against the belly and one behind the back. Pressure is moderate throughout and the low back and hips take most of the hour.

You wear
Undress to your comfort. Draped the whole time.
You are on
A table, on your side, bolstered.
Talking
Expected at the start, then your call.
After
Get up slowly. There is a chair by the door and water in the front room.

Ask your own midwife or physician before booking this one, and tell us at the desk what they said.

Light pressure, lymphatic style

$105

Very light, slow, repetitive strokes over the neck, trunk and limbs, closer to a stretch of the skin than to pressure on the muscle. If you have booked a deep tissue hour before and liked it, this will feel like almost nothing is happening.

You wear
Undress to your comfort. Draped the whole time.
You are on
A table, face up for most of the hour.
Talking
Not expected.
After
You can drive. Some people want a bathroom on the way out.

If you are being followed for anything by a physician, ask them about this one first.

90 minutes

The whole thing. Booked mornings and after five, and it is the length most people move to once they have been in a few times.

Thai, the long form

$150

The sixty minute mat session with nothing cut. Feet and legs get their full sequence, the back opens in stages instead of at once, and the last ten minutes are the neck and the face while you stay lying down.

You wear
Loose clothes. No jeans, no belt.
You are on
A padded mat, on the floor.
Talking
Not expected.
After
You walk out in the same clothes.
The mat room: a wide padded floor mat laid out on pale board floors, two firm bolsters and a folded wool blanket stacked at one end, light from a low window.

Shiatsu

$150

Also on the mat and also fully clothed, but stationary rather than mobile: thumb, palm and elbow pressure held on one point at a time down the back, the hips and the limbs, with your weight staying where it is.

You wear
Loose clothes, long sleeves if you run cold.
You are on
A padded mat, on the floor.
Talking
Not expected.
After
You can drive.

Stretch and cedar

$165

Twenty minutes in the cedar room first, a cool rinse, then the full assisted stretch hour. Booked as one appointment, so the room is held for you and nobody is waiting on the bench.

You wear
Swimsuit or shorts in the cedar room, then stretch clothes.
You are on
A cedar bench, then a wide low table.
Talking
Expected during the stretch.
After
Allow a while before driving. There is a shower and there are towels.
The cedar room in low light: two tiers of plank bench, a wooden bucket with a ladle sitting on the lower bench, and a stack of rolled white towels on the upper one.
The cedar room seats four and is booked by the room, not by the seat.

The cedar room and the cold rinse.

Forty five minutes, $40 a person, two person minimum, and the room is yours for the whole booking. Most people go in for twelve to fifteen minutes, rinse cold, sit on the bench outside for about as long, and do that two or three times. There is a clock on the wall and a pitcher of water on the bench.

It is a wooden room that gets hot, and the rinse is a shower that runs cold. That is the extent of what we will tell you it is. Whether it suits you is a question for your own physician, particularly if you are pregnant or are being treated for anything cardiac.

Book the cedar room

Smooth dark river stones warming in a shallow copper bowl of water on an oak counter, a folded linen cloth beside it.

Coming in more than once.

The monthly

$85 a month

One sixty minute session a month at a held rate, and any further session that month at $85 as well. Unused months roll for a year. Cancel with a month's notice, in person or by telephone, and there is no form to fill in.

Five, paid up front

$430

Five sixty minute sessions, any of the sixty minute list, mixed however you like. Transferable to one other person. No expiry.

Two rooms, same hour

From $190

Both rooms booked at once, two therapists, two sessions off the same list. You are in separate rooms and meet in the front room afterwards, which is the part most people are actually asking about.

A gift booking

Any amount

Written on a card at the desk with the date left open, or by telephone if you want it mailed. Gift bookings do not expire and are not refundable for cash.

Rolled cream towels and folded linen sheets stacked on a pale stone shelf in warm side light.

Before you come in.

Parking
The lot behind the building, off the alley. The street spaces out front are two hour and are enforced.
The stairs
One flight, no lift. Tell us when you book and the ground floor room is held for you instead.
Arriving
Ten minutes early the first time, five after that. The door is unlocked during booked hours and there is nobody at a desk between appointments.
Running late
The session ends when it was going to end. Call and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth coming.
Cancelling
By six the evening before, by telephone. Later than that and the session is charged, because the hour cannot be refilled.
Telling us things
Say what hurts, what you have been told by a physician, what you are taking and what you would rather we left alone. Any of it is a reason to change the session or to send you back to your own clinician first.

Where it is, and when.
